Jeremiah 41

The assaassination of Gedaliah was described (Jeremiah 40.7-9; 41.1-3; 2 Kings 25.22-26). Ishmael with a company of ten men slew Gedaliah. and a sorrow band of men who were also slaughtered en masse. Ishmael then fled to Ammon.

Ishmael Takes the People Captive:23 41:4-10; The Captives were released by Johanan: 41:11-18

Application: Even in this situation, God is in control!

Verses to meditate: 17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem on their way to Egypt 18 to escape the Babylonians. [b] They were afraid of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

Today's Reading is Jeremiah 40, Psalms 91.1-6

Jeremiah 40
Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard freed Jeremiah. he told him that God's purpose has been acomplished for Jerusalem and he was free to go and he gave him provisions and a present! Nebuzaradan told Jeremiah ro stay with Gedaliah.

Gedaliah was assassinated (Jeremiah 40.7-9; 41.1-3; 2 Kings 25.22-26)
Jeremiah went to stay with Gedaliah. Gedaliah was made governor over the remnant of Jews left in Judah. He told them to carry on with their lives as usual and obey Nebuchadnezzar as possible. Gedaliah did not believe Johanan when he said that Baalis had sent Ismael to kill him.

Application:
God had let a heathen commander in chief realize His purpose. How ironical for the people of Judah who could not see the whole picture. God had provided all of Jeremiah needs during the captivity.

Verses to meditate on:
2 When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, "The LORD your God decreed this disaster for this place. 3 And now the LORD has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the LORD and did not obey him. 4 But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don't come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please."

Jeremiah 40 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Psalm 89, with Commentaries, verse by verse
The psalm was a maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. It open in verses 1-2 with a praise of God’s love and faithfulness. In verse 3-4 the Davidic covenant was mentioned and celebrated. In verse 5-8 there is praise for God who is awesome in power and faithful. Verses 9-13, speak about God as the Almighty and powerful Creator. Which one of these verses stand out to you?

You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

Jeremiah 39
All of the prophecies about the fall of Jerusalem came true. It was too late for the people to turn to God in prayer. All of Jeremiah's words fell on deaf ears from the king to the beggar in Jerusalem.

It was horrible for Zedekiah for he had to see his sons killed before his very eyes. After that his eyes were gouged out.

Nebuchadnezzae ordered that Jeremiah's life be spared and he was allowed to stay with the people of Judah.

Application: What an ending for Jerusalem. Some were spared others were slaughtered. Yet through all of this Jeremiah remained faithful to the Lord.

Verses to meditate: 16 "Go and tell Ebed-Melech the Cushite, 'This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words against this city through disaster, not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. 17 But I will rescue you on that day, declares the LORD; you will not be handed over to those you fear. 18 I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with your life, because you trust in me, declares the LORD.' "

Today's Reading is Jeremiah 38, Psalms 90.1-6

Jeremiah 38
jeremiah kept on preaching that Judah would be destroyed by the Babylonians. The people could not stand it anymore, they came to Zedekiah and Zedekiah said he would not stop them from killing Jeremiah. Jeremiah was thrown into a cistern. But Ebed-Melech, a Cushite, came to Jeremiah's rescue and appeal to the king for help.

Zedekiah spoke to Jeremiah again, and Jeremiah told him to surrender to the Babylonians.

Application:
Sin has its consequence. Whatever is sown will be reaped. There is mercy shown before the actual punishment. Mercy precedes judgement. Zedekiah's life was spared Jehoiakim ignored God's warning and burnt the scroll. He reaped what he sowed.

20 "They will not hand you over," Jeremiah replied. "Obey the LORD by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the LORD has revealed to me:

Jeremiah 38 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Psalm 88, with Commentaries, verse by verse
Psalm 88.1-18 is a psalm of the sons of Korah. It is a cry from the depth of his soul! He is crying desperately to God to save him. He is appealing to God to save him before he goes into ‘the land of oblivion’ (v. 9-12) In verse 13-14 he conclude his prayer. In verse 15-18 the psalmists claimed that he had suffered God’s wrath. This sounds a lot like Job when he complains to God. Sometimes when we cry to God, He does not seem to answer, He is in the shadows waiting for us and still protecting even though He is silent. Have you ever experience the Silence of God?

Jeremiah 37
Zedekiah had asked Jeremiah to pray to God for them. The word of the Lord came to jeremiah and said that Egypt which was supposed to help Zedekiah had gone back to Egypt and the Babylonians will come and invade Judah. He warned them not to deceive themselves in thinking that they would never be invaded by Babylon. They would not escape from the Babylonians.
Jeremiah left the city for a real estate transaction when the captain of the guard arrested him on the charge of desertion. Jeremiah tried to expllain to them but they would not listen, so they had him beaten and thrown in prison.

Application: Even when you tell the truth and stand up for the truth, the unbeliever (and even believers) will not believe. The best thing to do in this situation is stand up suffer for righteousness rather than for doing wroing.

Verses to meditate: 18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What crime have I committed against you or your officials or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, 'The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land'?

Jeremiah complains to God. v. 1-4. He asked the eternal question, 'Why does the way of the wicked prosper?' We are like Jeremiah at times. We complain when things get tough.

God is very patient and answers him. Does this sound like Job? God is very patient and wants men to come and repent, he is giving them time, even the wicked!!

Verse to meditate on:
1 You are always righteous, O LORD,
when I bring a case before you.
Yet I would speak with you about your justice:
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why do all the faithless live at ease?
2 You have planted them, and they have taken root;
they grow and bear fruit.
You are always on their lips
but far from their hearts.

Jeremiah discusses God and idols (v. 1-16) (Jeremiah 10.12-16; Jeremiah 51.15-19)

Jeremiah reminded the people not to be like other nations who make gods as idols.

He warns the people of coming destruction from the Babylonians (v. 17-22)

Jeremiah's Prayer: (v. 23-24)
Verse to meditate on:

23I know, LORD, that a person's life is not his own. No one is able to plan his own course. 24So correct me, LORD, but please be gentle. Do not correct me in anger, for I would die. 25Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to recognize you--on nations that do not call upon your name. For they have utterly devoured your people Israel,[c] making the land a desolate wilderness.

Psalm 79.5-10
God is a God of love, let us not forget that but He is a God of Judgment. Can we pray that God would judge the nations that will not acknowledge Him?

Today's Reading is Isaiah 48; Psalms 60
Isaiah is speaking to the remnant. Israel is seen as stubborn and rebellious, yet God is faitfhul (v. 4). What Isaiah prophesied here about Israel is not very complimentary! They were hypocritcal (v. 1-2), stubborn (v. 4). Notice the word IF in v. 18-20:
18 If only you had paid attention to my commands,
your peace would have been like a river,
your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

How may people returned to Israel under Zerubbabel? Only 50,000 to rebuild the temple and the walls! What happened to the rest of them? Thye did not want to lesve their comfortable lives in Babylon.

Sometimes we claim promises from the Bible, which is good! BUT we ignore those little pesky words called prepositions, just as IFs, ANDs, or BUTs and we pay the consequences for that just like the people of Judah.

This psalm is of David. According to the NIV Study Bible, When David fought Aram Naharaim and Aram Zorah and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. (2samuel 18.3). verse 103 David lamented over God's rejection of the Israelites. Verse 4-9, David plead to God for help, knowing that God would answer his prayers. Verse 10-12 David is confident of victory that God will give Israel. The verse that spoke to me is verse 12 'With God we will gain the victory and he will trample down our enemies.'

Today's Reading is Isaiah 41; Psalms 55

Isaiah 41
Isaiah continue with the idea of the nations renewing strength in the Lord from Isaiah 40.29-31. we continue with the them of 'Who is God?' in Isaiah 40. Notice the subject 'I' refers to the almighty God. Here are some examples of verse to meditate on: verse 4 '...I, the Lord-with the first of them and with the last- I am he.' Notice the phrase 'do not fear' in in verse 10: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. in verse 13 For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. 14 Do not be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel, for I myself will help you," declares the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. God was speaking to the people of Judah o comfort them, but even today with uncertainty and hopelessness we can cling to the words that God spoke here: DO NOT FEAR.
The Lord Almighty is also speaking of the future when the Messianic Kingdom will be established: verse 17-20, where the desert will turn into pools of waters, put the cedar acacia , the myrtle and the olive in the desert. (Isaiah 35.7)

A remarkable prophecy occur some 100 years before it happened. God spoke about someone from the north who would rescue the thread on rulers including the Babylonians (v. 25). We will speak more aboyt Cyrus later.

This psalm is a prayer of David for God's help when he faced a conspiracy in Jerusalem which was under the leadership of a former friend. The situation described is like that of the conspiracy of Absalom conspiracy against his father. We can imagine David felt betrayal, disappointment and mistrust when he heard about this conspiracy. The verse that spoke to me is verse 22: Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.

Isaiah 39
In 2 Kings 20.12-19; Isaiah 39.1-8 Envoys from Babylon came to visit Hezekiah and he showed them what he had in his storehouses and treasures. Isaiah came to Hezekiah after the visit and prophesied that the Babylonians would come and pillage all the treasures and take away his descendants to Babylon. Hezekiah said that the word of the Lord was good because he would not live to see peace and security in his lifetime. Hezekiah did not realize the implications of what Isaiah said. In 586 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem destroy the Temple and carry of the royal household including Daniel, Sharach, Meshach and Abed-Nego (Daniel 1). In Hezekiah's days, Babylon was not a major world power, so he had problem showing his treasures to the Babylonian envoys. The wickedness of Hezekaih's son Manasseh was a major cause of the captivity (2Kings 21.11-15).

Psalm 53.1-6
This is a somber psalm reminding us about people who claim that there is no God are labeled fools. No one understand or seeks for God. This is very serious accusation of the human race. We are all corrupt, there is no one sho does good, not even one. (verse 3) Rom 3.23 The psalmist then talk about the characteristic of evildoers: that they never learn, devour God’s people, never call on God, overcome with dread even when there is no dread. God despised them and scatter the bones of those who attack the righteous. Finally, in verse 6, salvation would come from Zion when God restores his people’s fortune.

Isaiah 35
This chapter deals with the future. This is when the glorious kingdom has come. Desert and the parched land will be glad. The fact is we will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God. Have you ever thought about the glory of God? You should be full of awe and be humbled at the same time. It cannot be described. Isaiah is encouraging the people, look beyond your circumstances and look to God! Verse 5-6 speaks of spiritual and physical healing which is reflected in Christ's and the Apostles ministry on earth. Matthew 11.5; Matthew 12.2; Acts 3.7-8. It is encouraging to me in 1 John 3.2-3 says ' But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. '
A favorite word of Isaiah is the 'highway'. In 36.8, the highway is mentioned and is called the way of Holiness. Only the redeemed will be there and they will enter Zion with singing and everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them and sorrow and sighing will flee away. (NIV)

Psalm 51, with Commentaries verse by verse

Psalm 51.1-19 is a psalm of David, He wrote this when the prophet Nathan came to him and rebuked him (2Samuel 12.1-14) after he committed adultery with Bathsheba (2Samuel 11). David has been nicknamed "The greatest of saints, the greatest of sinners. This is one of the seven penitential psalms. In verse 4, David acknowledged that the sin of adultery, murder, and lying that he committed was AGAINST GOD. We need to realize that the sins we commit against other people, ultimately, we are sinning against God.
In Verse 17 and 18 David realized that the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart. We need to realize that saying the right things is not good enough to be reconciled to God and man. It also is a change in an attitude of repentance. Repentance means taking 180 degrees turn from the direction we were in, that is from sinning and now heading into righteousness.

Psalm 49 deals with death and money. Let us be careful to realize that money cannot stop death (v. 5-9) 8 For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever-9 That he should continue to live eternally, And not see the Pit.(NKJV) You cannot take money with you (v. 10-15). Job said in Job 1:11 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD."

Today's Reading is Isaiah 30; Psalms 48

Isaiah 30
The fourth woe to Judah is for rebellion (v. 1-17). The people did not turn to God but to Egypt to help them fight the Assyrians. (v. 2-5). How could the Egyptians protect Judah against mighty Assyria?
It was bad that they trusted in Egypt, they went further to reject God’s word (v. 8-11). God told Isaiah to wear a sign that said ‘These are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction.’ No doubt, Isaiah became the laughing stock of everyone who saw him wearing this sign. People want to hear good news not bad news. Isn’t it the same today in the society, and in our churches. The city walls will collapse because of the decisions they made. Isn’t it sad when God offers them salvation (in verse 15, ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you will have none of it’ They did not want to listen and obey.
In v. 18-26 Isaiah spoke about restoration. In the FUTURE, God will restore Israel back to her land where she will enjoy the blessings of the kingdom, instead they are scoffing at Isaiah and his words.

In verse 27-33 Isaiah speaks about retribution. God will use Assyria to discipline Judah but they will not captire Jerusalem. Assyria will be judged in the future. Isaiah used the illustration of Topheth .was a place outseide Jerusalem where children were offed to Molech. Topheth was prepared for the king of Assyria. Topheth was descrated bu Josiah (2Kings 23.10) and turned into a garbage dump and named ‘Gehenna’/ Gehenna is the New Testament word for hell. The funeral pyre for the Assyrian king would be a garbage dump.

Psalm 48.1-14
The verse that spoke to me today was verse 1 Great is the Lord, and most worthy to be praised, in the city of God, his holy mountain. We need to come to God, to praise Him for who is. He is the great ‘I am’. He is worthy to be praised. We should come to God and kneel before Him for who is NOT for what he gives. We should be thinking every day of God for who He is. Some of his attributes to think about. He is eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, is everywhere.

Wiersbe quoted in With the Word Commentary from C.S. Note that the chapter on Isaiah 28-31 is titled 'Storm Cloud over Jerusalem'. (Be Comforted by Warren Wiersbe) According to Wiersbe, five woes (28.1; 29.1; 15; 30.1; 31.1) These woes are focused on Jerusalem. Isaiah warns the of God's judgment on the Northern Kingdom, Israel. (v. 1-6). If it can happen to them it can also happen to Judah. He rebuked them for their drunkenness. The proud people of Judah were rejoicing about the peril the Northern Kingdom was in but they were also guilty as those in Samaria. They had also mocked God's prophet. Isaiah and rejected God's Word. Does this sound like the moral conditions of today! God offers His people rest. but they will not obey His word. Their only hope is in God but they cannot see or understand. They were under the delusion that God would not punish them because they were God's people.

Psalm 47, with Commentaries verse by verse

Psalm 47 was also written by the Sons of Korah. This psalm is one of praise. The verse that spoke to me was verse 2 How awesome is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth. God is an awesome God. He is worthy of our praise and worship. Look at the creation, how amazing things are! The forces of nature such as the volcano at Mount St Helens. the tsunami that hit South Asia and the hurricanes Florida had last fall. Man cannot even predict the weather accurately, even with the supercomputers that we have but God used men prophesy about the future and they got it right 100 percent of the time.

Today's Reading is Isaiah 25, Psalm 55.1-8

Isaiah 25
A song of praise for the deliverance of the remnant from the Lord's devastation of the earth, Isauah 24.14-16; Isaiah 12 (see May 1 reading). The mountain in verse 6, 7, 10 is Mount Zion. We are looking at the future, the Millenial Kingdom. In verse 6-8, is a descriptiopn of the feast we will have at that time. In verse 12, Isaiah reiterated the theme of judgement.

Some things to priase God for. As Christians we do not need to be afraid of whatever trials and tribulation we have to face in the past, present and the future. Isaiah praise the Lord for his faithfulness. Here are some things that Isaiah praise God for: He has been a refuge to the poor, a refuge for the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm, a shade from the heat. verse 3 God know how to take care of His own!!

Today's Reading is Isaiah 24; Psalms 45

Isaiah 24.1-27.13 is concerned with the judgements and the blessings of the last days. Do you believe we are in the last days? It will a time of God’s victory over the forces of satan. These chapters are a conclusion of Isaiah 13-23. Isaiah 24 is a very sobering chapter,. It speaks of the devastation of the earth by the Lord God. How will it be done? Of course though the seven seals, trumpets and bowls that are in Revelation. But let us remember God’s mercy precedes His judgement. There is still time for people to repent, to come to Jesus Christ before the end has come. In chapter 24, God will judge his enemies.
Such words as lay waste, devastate, ruin are common in this chapter. Notice in verse 2, the judgement will be for ALL of his enemies. Notice in verse 5 the earth is defiled by its people. The earth is polluted, not only in the sense of the environment but also the earth has polluted God’s laws, they have violated his statutes. In verse 6 earth’s inhabitants are burned up. Do you believe there is such a thing as the Greenhouse effect? Well, burning of hydrocarbons in the air has increased the concentration of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and will increase the temperatures which will affect the climate the ecology and man. Only a few olives and grapes will be left (v. 6; 17.6,11)
In verse 14-16a, the godly remnant will survive the judgement. All through history of Israel, it is the godly remnant who survives judgement. This will be true in the last days as well! These will rejoice in the Righteous One regardless of what happens in the world. The doctrine of the remnant is a very important concept of Isaiah (see Isaiah 1.9; 10.20-22; 11.11, 16; 14.22, 30).
In verse 17-18, we see pictures of animals trying to escape traps but were unable to do so. In Revelation 6.15-17, no matter where sinners go, they will be unable to escape from the wrath of God. This is the only way that you can escape the wrath of God, run to Jesus Christ and you will be saved. The wrath is coming very soon. Remember mercy comes before judgement. In the first coming, Jesus came as the Lamb, as our Savior, in the second coming, He is coming as Judge and King, Will you be ready when He comes?

Psalm 45 is a wedding song, written by the Sons of Korah. The bride was a foreign princess (v. 10,12). The groom is a type of Christ. Some have interpreted this to be when the Christ comes back to be with the Church at the second coming. Isn't this appropraite that it is related to the chapter in Isaiah.

Today's Reading is Isaiah 6

Isaiah 6
This was Isaiah's encounter with God and his call to the ministry. It happened the year Uzziah died. Uzziah was probably related to Isaiah. Isaiah was from the royal court of Judah. Isaiah was in mourning when he saw the vision of the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted. He saw seraphs with six wings, and they were calling to each other a triasignon: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty, the whole earth is full of his glory. Isaiah realized he was before a Holy God and that he was a sinner, a man of unclean lips. What about us do we realize our sinfulness and do we know the holiness of God.

Since he was a man of unclean lips, one of the seraph put burnong coals on his lips, and his guilt was taken way and his sins were atoned for.

Then he heard the voice of God saying 'Whom shall I send and who will go for us? Isaiah said, 'here I am send me!' God send Isaiah to a ministry which was not an attractive or successful one. He was to go to a peple who wound not listen to the message, their hearts would be calloused, their eras dull and their eyes closed. How many of us would volunteer for that minisry?

Isaiah 6.8

Isaiah asked 'How long?" The Lord gave this devastating answer, until the cities lie desolate and even though a remnant remains, it will again be laid to waste, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land. Even through all this gloom and darkness there was light! The holy seed would come from the stump. A tree can still grow from its stump! So even though the land is desolate becasue of the Babylonian captivity, the holy seed, Jesus, would come on earth and die for us.

Today's Reading is Isaiah 3, Psalm 78:32-55

Isaiah 3
Isaiah prophesied on the judgement on Jerusalem and Judah. The leaders would be taken away (v. 1-3). There would be a vaccum in leadership (v. 4-7), chaos and anarchy would result. Things got bad because God stepped away from the situation and let nature (the sinful nature of man) have its course. God left them to their wickedness. In verse 1624 Isaiah condemned the overemphasis on the external ornaments, jewelry and clotes. God is going to judge them and us in the last days (13-15). the prophecies spoken here probably applied in Isaiah's day and definitely happened when the Babylonians attacked Jerusalem in 586 B.C.

Psalm 78:32-55
Is a maskil of Asaph. Verses. 32-39 speaks about rebellion from the Isralite which was anormal way of life for them. Verses 40-64 A repetition of the verse 17-39, the people rebelled, they did not remembered the plagues God gave the Egyptians to free the people (v. 40-55). We should thank God that even though we have sinned like the Israelites He hes not forgotten his mercy and grace to us.

Today's Reading is Isaiah 2, Psalm 38.17-22

Isaiah 2

This chapter deals with the last days, un the Millenial Kingdom, the fourth peak, (Isaiah 2.1-4; Micah 4.1-3). Jerusalem will become the center of the world! Everyone will be going to Mount Zion, the Mountain of the Lord. 4And He will judge between the nations,And will render decisions for many peoples; And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war. (NASB). At the United Nations, there is a stutue similar to the one below where they MISQUOTE Scripture for their own ends. The caption for the statute said (paraphrase) 'And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war.' There was NO mention of God judging between nations. We need to be carful of misquoting Scripture for our own ends.

The Day of the Lord (verse 6-22), that will be a day of good news and bad news for the peoples of the world. The good news is for those whose know Jesus Christ it will be a day of glorification and resureection! That day will be bad news for those who refuse Jesus Christ in their lives and will face the Judgement. I believe we are getting closer to that day, everyday. What is the Day of the Lord? Some have identified that as a period of time, I have identified as a 24-hour period. According to the NIV Study Bible, it is a time of judgement and/or blessing as God intervenes decisively in the affairs of nations (see Zephaniah 1.4-2.3).

This chapter also deals deals with the captivity as well, in verse 5-20 Assyria and babylon would bring terror upon Judah in Isaiah's day. So when the prophet Isaiah sees this vision he sees it been fulfilled in his day (Peak 1) and in the future (Peak 4).

One phrase that occurs frequently in Isaiah is ON THAT DAY. We will spend one day looking at that phrase.

Today's Reading is Isaiah 1, Psalm 38.9-16

Isaiah 1
Isaiah had served under two good kings Uzziah and Hezekiah and two bad kings Jotham and Ahaz.. Isaiah 1 is an indictment of Judah as a rebellious nation against God. Such phrase as The ox his master, the donkey on his owner’s manger but Israel does not know, my people don’t understand; sinful nation; a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers (v. 6), Sodom, Gomorrah, . (10). These are less than flattering to the people of Judah. They had practice religion not a relationship with God! He was tired of their offering and sacrifices (v. 11-14), their meaningless prayer (v. 15) .
God required something positive from them notice verse 16-18 "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. 18 "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.

Verse 18 is a promise for us today that we can be cleansed before God by the blood of Jesus but we must be willing and obedient. Let us not take verses out of context because we want to feel warm and fuzzy inside let us look at the harsh reality of things. Notice the word ‘IF’ in verse 19 and 20. If you do it THEN..; if you don’t do it then.. There are consequences in our lives to face. Let us not quote 1John 1.9 and not follow through with obedience. This was what faced Judah. So in verse 19 If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; 20 But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword"; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. .If they were obedient they would do well BUT if they resist and rebel, they would be devoured by the sword. This was what happened to Judah in 586 B.C. when the Babylonians destroyed the Temple.
Verse 27-28 speak of the future not only in 586 B.C. but of the Millennial Kingdom .

Isaiah 1

The Books of Prophecy consist of the Major and Minor Prophets, These are classied as such because of the volume of twords written in each book rather than the importance of the book. Compare the number of words and you will see the difference. The Major Prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel.

The book of Isaiah is known as the Little Bible. It has 66 chapters like the Bible. Chapters 1-39 speaks more of the Righteousness of God and His Judgement which any identify with the Old Testament and Chapters 40-66 has 27 chapters just like the Old Testament and tend to talk about the comfort and compassion that God will give his people. This is similar to the New Testament. The Theme running through Isaiah is salvation. The name Isaiah means 'God is salvation'.

There are four prophetic peaks (points) which are desribed in Jensen's Jensen's Bible Study Charts. Peak 1 deals with the prophecy in the prophet's lifetime, Peak 2 deals with the prophecy related to the Captivity and the Restoration, Peak 3 is the The First Coming of Jesus, Peak 4 is related to the Second return and the Millenial Kingdom, New Heavens and New Earth. When a prophet sees a vision or has a revelation from God it could be any of these four prophetic peaks or a combination of peaks. For example, Isaiah 53 spoke about the first coming. Isaiah 9 is a combination of Peaks 3 and 4.

Ecclesiastes 7, Solomon was the wisest man in his time, he was famed for using the sword to resolve which of the two prostitutes was the mother of the baby, his wisdom in answering the questions from the Queen of Sheba (1Kings 4.29-34; 1Kings 10)

Let us face the fact ALL that companionship, material possessions, wisdom that we have, we CANNOT take it us when we die, except our faith in Jesus Christ. Then in eternal light, all the works, dreams, ambitions and promotions are meaningless IF Jesus Christ is not the Lord and Savior of our lives.

Psalm 36.7-12
The goodness and graciousness of God is mentioned in v. 5-12. When we realize how sinful we are, and how God sent His Son to save us we experience His grace and mercy towards us.

Today's Reading in Poetry and Prophecy is: Ecclesiastes 5; Psalms 35.17-28

Ecclesiastes 5.1-7 be careful with your tongue and how you make vows. Instead stand in awe of God. In v. 8-20, Solomon should know about wealth, he was the richest man in his time, yet thus was meaningless. Jesus said in Matthew 6.28-29, that Solomon even in all his glory was not dressed like a lily in the field. Jesus was talking about not worrying about your life, or wealth, God will take care of everything in your life.

Psalm 35.17-28
This is considered and imprecatory psalm, that is, David is asking God to deal with his enemies. God will deal with our enemies in His own way and time. Meanwhile we should pray that God would soften their heart to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ecclesiastes 3.1-8 this is the famous passage on ‘a time for everything’ The Bryds made this song which was an antiwar song and based on this passage. In verse 11 ...God has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

He also warned about judgement from God v. 16-17

Whatever choice we pick for eternity, the wrong or right choice, we will face judgment, the righteous and the wicked.

Ecclesiastes 2 Pleasures are meaningless v. 1-11
Wisdom and folly are meaningless 12.16
Toil or work is meaningless v. 17-26

When Jesus Christ is not in control of your life, then pleasures, wisdom and folly, toil or work is meaningless. Why is it that we think that things can satisfy when God is the only one who can satisfy our every needs?

Psalm 34.15-22
Here we see that God pays attention to the righteous (v. 15-20). Note the Messianic prophecy in v. 20 he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.. Jesus Christ is exemplified as the righteous man.

This is an account of the wicked and the righteous. The Bible is very clear of only two classes of people in the world: either you are for Him or against Him. There is no middle ground.

v. 1-3 is an exhortation to praise the Lord.
v. 4-9 We should praise the Lord because He is creator.

Solomon describes the fool and his folly (v. 1-12) and the lazy man and the lying tongue (v. 13-28).

This Psalm is a Penetential Psalm. When you need to confess yours sins, this is the psalm to come to (in addition to Psalm 51). It is blessed to be forgiven (v. 1) and sin confessed and forgiven (v. 3-7).

God is having this conversation with Job. I don't see how Job coul have a conversation with the Almighty when He is challenging himwith profound questions of His creation!
