READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 23

King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 23

Isaiah 23
This was a prophecy against Tyre. He told the Phoenicians to go home and weep because Tyre was no more. Isaiah went on to explain why this is happening to Tyre (v. 8-14). The reason why God is punishing them is pride (v. 9), a sin that God hates. In verse 15 Tyre would be forgotten for seventy years. This happened in history. Tyre or Sidon did not have commerce for seventy years because the Assyrians had placed restrictions on them form 700-630 B.C.

What have learnt form this section (Isaiah 13-23)? God is control of the nations of the world; He hates the sins of pride ; and lastly he has words of promise hope for his people,

Today's Reading is Isaiah 22; Psalms 44.9-26

King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 22; Psalms 44

Isaiah 22
Prophecy against Jerusalem. Isaish's vision was when the Assyrian attack by Sennacherib on Jeruslaem (Isaiah 36-37). There was unbelief among the people (1-14). The city depended on its troops and walls but not on God. They did not consider prayer or fasting.

There was unfaithfulness of the leaders (22.15-25). A crisis can bring out the best or the worst in people. We have two individuals Shebna show used his office for personal gain (v. 15-16) and the crisis led him to personal shame. Shebna had cvered up and cheated the people until someone did an inventory of the city resources and found that he had cheated the people. He spent the rest of his life in exile and captivity. On the other hand, Eliakim showed servanthood, he was a father to the people, a person who could be trusted and blameless. He is the kind of leader we need in our churches and comminity today.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 21

King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 21

Isaiah 21
Prophecy against Babylon v. 1-10; Edom v. 11-12 and against Arabia v. 13-17

Isaiah use three pictures here to visualize what would happen. The first is the woman in labor v. 1-4. This is what the end of the Babylonian Empire would be like. The second was the threshing floor v. 10 and the last was the watchman in verse 5-9, 11-17.

In verse 11.12 Isaiah prophesied against Edom. The Edomites were ancestors of Esau (or Edom). Isaiah was the pictured as a watchman in verse 5-9, 11-17. He was asked what did he see. He said he saw the Assyrians approaching. The Edomites wanted to know if there was any hope against the Assyrians. Isaiah had invited the Edomites to trust in the Lord. Verse 12 ‘The watchman replies, “Morning is coming, but also the night, if you ask, then ask and come back yet again.” But they did that they did not know that God would defeat the Assyrians when they tried to attack Jerusalem (Isaiah 37).

Isaiah 21.13-17 Isaiah prophesied against Arabia, How could the Arabian caravans resist the invading Assyrian army? Within a year they would be gone.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 20, Psalm 44.1-8

King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 20; Isaiah 44

Isaiah 20 is a prophecy against Cush and Egypt. This probably happened in 711 B.C. attacked Asdod, a city in Philstia. Isaiah did some eye-opening object lessons to catch Judah’s attention. Isaiah was told to take off the sackcloth and the sandals that he was wearing. The lesson was that Isaiah warned and alliance with Egypt and Cush was bound for failure. Isaiah walked around in a wearing a lioncloth dressed like a prisoner of war for three years.

Psalm 44.1-8
This Psalms was written by the Sons of Korah. v. 1-8, they remembered what their fathers told them that God had driven out the enemies. The victories that the Israelites claimed were not do to the army or might of Israel but to God. In verses 4-8, they trusted in God and not in their weapons, because God is the one who ensures that they win the battle.
In the same way, our lives are a spiritual battle with the evil one. It has been God who had brought us here so far, and He is the One who will ensure that we will have the victory, then one day we will get to heaven to be with Him. v. 8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. We should not boast of anything that we have done or hope to accomplish. when we boast in Him, we are humbled by His awesome might and power.

Today's Reading is Isaiah 19
King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links: Isaiah 19

Isaiah 19 is a prophecy against Egypt. God will judge Egypt (Isaiah 19.1-15; 20.1-6) The idols of Egypt are no match against God, There will be civil war (v. 2) . Assyria captured Egypt in 670 B.C.

God will also save Egypt (Isaiah 19.16-25) There is a remarkable prophecy in verse 24: Egypt, Israel and Assyria (modern day Iraq)- will one day worship the Lord together and share His blessing! The three countries will be a blessing to the nations. With all these things happening in Iraq, do you see God’s hand in America’s involvement and Iraq? This is exciting news, and may happen in the near future.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 18, Psalm 43

Isaiah 18 The burden was against Cush. This included Today's Ethiopia, the Sudan and Somalia. Isaiah called Cush a land of whirring wings because of the insects such as locusts that plagued the land but also because of activities to head off an attack from the Assyrians. God told Cush not ot worry about Assyria because He would take care of them in His own way, not by diplomatic or military means. We need to put our trust in God not man's ability to solve problems in our lives whether it is a personal, family, community or international problem.

Notice the frantic activities of the humans in verse 1-3 compared to to God who is at peace. God will harvest the world for judgement, v. 5-7. Assyria is pictured as a vine ready to be picked. In verse 6 Isaiah spoke about the birds and animals will feast on them. This was fulfilled in Isaiah 37,36 when birds and beasts fest on the corpse of 185,000 Assyrians troops. This will also be fulfilled in the future as mentioned in Revelation 14.14-20; 19.17-21.

When the Messianic kingdom is established, the Gentile nations will bring gifts and worship God at Mount Zion. (Isaiah 60.1-7).

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 17
King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 17

This is the prophecy against Damascus and Israel (Isaiah 17). Aram (Syria) was an old enemy of Israel and even today, Syria is an enemy is STILL and enemy of Israel. In 732 B.C. Tiglath-Pileser III captured Damascus and madie it an Assyrian province just as Isaiah prophesied.

Isaiah also emphasized the God of Isreal. He is the Lord of hosts (v. 3); the God of Israel (v. 6); the Holy One of Israel (v. 7); the God your savior and the Rock, your fortess.

Notice the phrase 'In that day' v. 4 speak of the captivity of the Northern Kingdom (v. 4-11); v, 7 speak of a brighter future the Millenial Kingdom; in v. 9 the desolation of the Northern Kingdom.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 16, Psalm 42

Isaiah 16.1-5, the Moabites fled to the fords of Arnon and the ‘rock city’ of Sela in Edom. Moab begged the leaders of Judah to provide them refuge from the Assyrians, like a shelter from the heat (v. 3-4) They wanted Judah’s help but not his God. Verse 5 is definitely Messianic and speaks of the son of David, Jesus Christ.

In v. 6-16, isaiah spoke about the pride of Moab, a very small nation compared to Babylon, but it is pride, nonetheless. Their pride prevented them from submitting to the God of Judah. In verse 9-11 Isaiah mourns for Moab, and this also reflect God grieving over the destruction of Moab. What spiritual lessons have we learnt here? Please post your comments below.

Psalm 42.1-11 with Commentaries, verse by verse
Thies is a psalm of the Sons of Korah asking for deliverance from the enemy. Just to reflect on v. 1-4. These Korahtites were longing to be with God at the temple. Do we thirst for God, the living God like the deer that pants for streams of water. Jesus is the only one who can satisfy your deepest longing. Jesus said to the woman at the well, in John 4.13-14, that he can satisfy the soul's deepest longing.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 15
King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 15

This is the prophecy against Moab (Isaiah 15-16.13). Moab was a long time enemy of Israel (Numbers 25; 31; Deuteronomy 23.3). The Moabites were related to the Jews in that there was an incestuos relationship between Lot and his daughters (Genesis 19.30-38).
Moab was in trouble! Notice the words used to describe lamentation of Moab: ruined, destroyed in a night, weep, wails, head shaved, beard cut off, sackcloth, weeping, cry out, etc.. The Moabites fled (Dibon) goes up to its temple but to no avail; to its high places to weep but to no avail.
Invading armies would need water and they would stop at Nimrim which was the major springs of Moab. The land was left desolate (v. 6-7). Notice in verse 9 that even the waters in Dimon was full of blood showing that many people were killed.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 14, Psalm 41

Isaiah 14
This is a continuation of the prophecy against Babylon. Israel will come back to Palestine. (v. 1-4) This could mean the return of the exiles during Ezra and Nehemiah or it could mean 1948, or it could mean the Millenial kingdom.

In verse 12-15, this is the fall of Babylon and the otiginator of the evil in Babylon, Satan. In verse 16-20 seem to talk about the king of Babylon.

God is taunting Babylon in verses 22-23.

In verse 24-27 Isaiah prophesied against Assyria. What God has planned cannot be stopped by mere man. God will crush the Assyrians in their land. This should be verses of comfort to us what God has purposed who can stop him?

In verse 28-32 Isaiah prophesied againt an old enemy of the twelve tribes, the Philistines. We have seen them fight against Samson, Saul and David. The historical event that happened here is the Philistines revolted against Assyria while its king was too busy handling revolts in other parts of the empire to pay attention to the revolt in Canaan. The Assyrians would attack Philstines at a later date when it quelled the revolts.

Bible Commentaries for Today's Reading Verse by Verse: Psalm 41
In this psalm, David was apparently ill from sin that he had commited (v. 3). His enemies were waiting for him to die, and they were gloating (v. 5-8). He conclude the psalm by saying that God should be merciful to him, and revive him so that he could triumph over his enemies.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 13

Isaiah 13
A new section begins in Isaiah 13.23.18 with a series of prophecies against the nations. The first is Babylon (13.1-14.23). Babylon was not even even a world power during the Assyrian empire in the days of Isaiah. Notice the phrase day of the Lord mentioned in verses 6 and 9. One type of prophecy is when the Babylonians invasion, and the other day of the Lord applies more to the second coming (v.9-12).

According to Guzik The day of the Lord is an important phrase, used some 26 times in the Bible. It speaks of not a single day of judgment, but of the season of judgment when the Lord sets things right. It is as if today is man’s day, but the Lord’s day is coming! ....In fact, Jesus was probably quoting or paraphrasing this passage from Isaiah in Matthew 24:29: Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Isaiah prophesied that the kingdom of Babylon (v.17-22) would be deoslate and attacked by the Medes. We know in Daniel 6-7 that the Mede took over Babylon. What is remarkable is that this prophecy was over 150 years before it happened.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 9.8-21

Isaiah 9.8-21
The section describe the events that will happen when the Assyrian invasion takes place in the Northern Kingdom. Isaiah was a prophet to Judah although he used Israel as a lesson for Judah to learn. Notice the phrase 'Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.' This appears in verses 12, 17, 21, and 10.4. Why is God doing this to the Northern Kingdom? Because He had a covenant with them but they became proud and arrogan (v. 8), they did not return nor did they sought Him (v. 13). The leaders who guide the people mislead them and those who follow went astray (v.14). Wickedness burns like fire (v.16).
What can we learn here: The wages of sin is death...! (Romans 6.23) Sin has its consequences. Israel as a nation had some 800 years or more from Moses until Isaiah's day and they were were given the covenant to follow God. Well, they had followed after other gods and they were being punished for it. It is unpopular today to talk about God is a holy God and that He will judge the wicked. Let th1s chapter be an object lesson for us to learn from the Northern Kingdom, Israel and the Southern Kingdom, Judah.

Galilee of the Gentiles was only mentioned once in the Old testament and is found in this passage Isaiah 9.1(Matthew 4.15; 26.32; 28.10) This passage (v. 2) which is fulfilled in Matthew 4.15-16. Jesus is the great light, He is the Light of the World. (John 9.5).

Handel's Messiah has a lot of exerpts from Isaiah including v. 6-7. and this is a prophecy of the second coming. The first coming Jesus came as a Servant, a Lamb. In the Second Comind, He will come as The King and Judge.

Bible Commentaries for Today's Reading Verse by Verse: Psalm 39:1-22
Psalm 39 is a psalm of David. The psalm speaks about how life can be so fleeting.
verse 4-6. We need to be constantly reminded that life is only temporary! Peter said that "all men are like grass")1Pet 1.24-25; James said that "life is like a vapor" James 4.14-15 and David said in this passage that life is like a breath (verse 5)

Today's Reading is Isaiah 8

Isaiah 8
The prophecy in Isaiah 7.14 became true because Isaiah had a son named Maher-Shal-Hash-Baz, which meant 'quick to plunder, swift to the spoil.' Within two years, the prophect became true, and started Aram and Israel was ransacked and plundered, just as Isaiah said in Isaiah 7.16. God had use Assyria as His instrument to punish Israel and Judah.

Isaiah exhort the people of Judah to fear God. He had given three analogies (Wiesbe: Be comforted) of The people of Judah. They chose a flood instead of a peaceful river (v. 5-10); They chose a snare instead of a sanctuary (v. 11-5) and theychose darkness instead of light (v. 16-22). Instead of turning to God they turned to demons (Isaiah 8.19; Deuteronomy 18.10-12). The verse that should speak to us today is verse 13-14: 13The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread. 14He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (NKJV). Jesus has been a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to many Jews but also to many Gentiles (1Peter 2.8).

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 7.18-25, Psalm 38

Isaiah 7.18-25
Notice the phrase 'In that day' v. 18, 20, and 23. The Assyrians would invade Judah. In v. 18 flies and bees from Assyria is mentioned which is similar to Exodus 23.28 meaning some agent would to diable or frighten the people so they would not resist the invasion, this time from Assyria. The last time in Exodus 23, it was the inhabitants of Canaan who were frightened and the Israelites invaded them. Now the table is reversed!

In v. 20, God is using Assyria as a razor to punish Judah 'to shave your head and and the hair of your legs and to take off your beard also.' The shaving of hair from one's body iwas a great insult (2Samuel 10.4-5) as seen the reaction of David when his men had half their beard shaved off.
In v. 23 even though the land is full of milk they would end up eating curd and honey, meaning that there would be a return to a simple diet because the Assyrian invasion would destroy the agricultural resources. There will be brier and thorns meaning that the destruction of the vineyard will be fulfilled in Isaiah 5.5-6.

Bible Commentaries for Today's Reading Verse by Verse: Psalm 38:1-22
Psalm 38 is a petition from David to God to heal from his illness. His friends left him (ver. 11) and his enemies (ver. 12,16,19-20) seek his life and tried to harm him. Despite his problems, he did not forget God and ask God not to forsake him (ver. 21-22). What about you, when you have pain and tribulation, who do you turn to?
We saw Jairus, the woman with bleeding and now, David all turning to God in FAITH to heal them.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 7.1-17

Isaiah 7.1-17
Syria and Ephraim (Northern Kingdom) had declared war on Judah. in 735/734 B.C. Jerusalem was under attack by Pekah of Israel and Rezin of Aram (Syria) but they could not overpower them. God, through Isaiah spoke to King Ahaz of Judah (the Southern Kingdom) giving him assurance that the alliance between Pekah and Rezin would not conquer Jerusalem. Isaiah said to Ahaz "If you do not stand firm in your faith you will not stand at all. Isaiah challenged Ahaz to ask for a sign that Jerusalem would not be conquered. Ahaz did not want a sign, being the hypocrite that he was. Isaiah said in verse 14 'Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and his name shall be Immanuel 'God be with us'.

This prophecy was fulfilled in Isaiah's day, because it indicated that a virgin (a young woman, 'almah Hebrew word meaning a woman about to be married) betrothed to Isaiah because his first wife had died. The second wife would have a son as a sign that Israel and Aram would not conquer Jerusalem but they themselves would be devastated before the child is old enough to know the difference between right from wrong, according to Jewish customs would be 12 or 13. This would bring us to the year 722 B.C. when Samaria and Syria would be overruned by the Assyrians! This child is a foreshadow of the Messiah, Jesus Christ in Matthew 1.22-23.

READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY

Today's Reading is Isaiah 5, Psalm 37:12-29

Isaiah 5.8-30
Six woes, covetousness (isa 5.8-10); drunkenness (5.11-17), carelessness 5.18-19; deception (5.20) ; pride (5.21), injustice (5.22-25)., followed by three judgements (9-10, 13-15, 24-25)

We see the rich defrauding the poor, people with alcholic problems. The Old Testament Law warned against drunkenness (Proverbs 20.1; 23.29-31; Habakkuk 2.15). This even happen today with people plagued with alcoholism, begin drinking as soon as they wake up until they go to sleep. This could also apply to drug addiction as well.

The third woe is carelessness, where people are flippant about their sins and the judgement of God on their lives. The fourth woe us deception, where they call evil good and good evil. We see this so common in today’s society, The fifth woe is pride where we think we are wise in our own eyes and clever in our own sight. The last woe is the injustice carried out in bribe taking, the judges, corrupt politicians. All of these woes recorded by Isaiah some 2700 years ago is STILL happening today. Let us fool ourselves, even Christians are guilty of some of these woes in our lives,.

In verse 26, He would summon the Assyrians and use them to chasten Israel and Judah. The Northern Kingdom would be destroyed (722 B.C.) and the Southern Kingdom, Judah would be devastated, be delivered and would itself go into captivity in 586 B.C. under the Babylonians..

Today's Reading is Isaiah 5, Psalm 78:65-72

Isaiah 5
Isaiah deals with the Song of the Vineyard and woes and Judgement (v. 8-30). The Song of the Vineyard represents Israel as the Vineyard bearing fruit. This is very identical to Jesus' parable of the tenants ">(Matthew 21.33-44). God had provided everything for the vineyard to grow and He expected Israel to bear fruit. Now in verse 5-7, God said what he would to the vineyard, he would remove its hedges, break down the wall, make it a wasteland, command the clouds not to rain on it. This was fulfilled in 722 B.C. by the invasion of the Assyrians and in 586 B.C. by the Babylonians.

Psalm 78 with Commentaries, verse by verse
Psalm 78:65-72
It is good to see some positive points in this psalm, namely God is victorious over His enemies, He acted in His own wisdom and chose for Himself the tribe of Judah over Joseph and Ephraim,. The second point is He chose David who was a shepherd boy to be the shepherd of His people. It should be comforting for us to know that God is in contol of the world, our churches, families and lives.

King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 4; ; Psalm 78

Today's Reading is Isaiah 4, Psalm 78:56-64

Isaiah 4
In verse 1, notice the phrase in that day (Isaiah 2.2; 2.11, 17, 20), this is some time in the future. There was a shortage of men that the women would grab hold of a man and said that they would provide their own food and clothes only that they have the man's family name to remove the disgrace. The war would make them widows and childless.

In verses 4.2-6, an oracle of redemption was sounded, of the Branch of the Lord who was the Messiah. Notice the phrase'in that day' occuring. This was speaking of the Millenial Kingdom and the Second Coming. The Messiah will come and wash away the filth by a spirit of judgement and a spirit of fire (verse 4). Verse 5 should remind us of the cloud which indicate the Presence of God in the wilderness (Exodus 13.21-22). In verse 6, God's presence in the cloud and fire will be a shelter and a shade from the heat of day and a hiding place from the storm and rain. God's presence will be there to protect Zion.

Psalm 78 with Commentaries, verse by verse
Psalm 78:56-64
Is a maskil of Asaph. Verses 56-64 is che desrciption about rebellion from the Isralites in the promised land. This is seen frequently seen in the book of Judges. We see that when the people rejected God, He turned his back on them and allowed the inhabitants of the land to attack them. We, hopefully, should learn from other people's mistakes. We should look at what God did to the Israelites and learn how God blessed them and caused adversity on them.
