Today's Reading is Isaiah 40.1-20

King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 40

Isaiah 40
Isaiah has been called the minature Bible. Chapter 1-39 emphasizes the judgement of God and is the message similar to the Old Testament. Chapter 40-66 emphsizes the love of God and is resembles the message of the New Testament.

Isaiah 40 speaks of God comforting His people. Notice the word comfort is a double imperative, that is, 'Comfort, comfort'. This double imperative occurs in Isaiah 40.1; 51.9, 17; 52.1, 11; 57.14.

The prophecy of the mission of John the Baptist is foretold and fulfilled in Matthew 3.3; Mark 1.3; Luke 3.4; John 1.23. The frailty of man as being grass is compared to the word of God last forever is mentioned v. 6-7. The greatness of God mentioned v. 9-20. I love the scene from The Chariots of Fire when Eric Liddle, a devout Christian, gave a speech in a church during the Olympics. And He quoted from Isaiah 40, about the greatness of God and the frailty of man.

Here is a biographical sketch of Eric Liddell, a who took a stand not to run on the Lord's day even though people would laugh at him and he would be disqualified from the Olympics. He honored God, and so God honored him.

Do we realize how great our God is, or do we treat Him with contempt. A verse worth meditating is verse 15 'Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scale.'
