READING LIST FOR POETRY AND PROPHECY
Today's Reading is Isaiah 52.13-53.3
King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links:Isaiah 52; Isaiah 53
The section Isaiah 52.13-53.12 deals with the suffering and the glory of the Servant.
The Seravnt is the Lord Jesus. The Jews have only thought of the Messiah as the King and the Conqueror. When Jesus was on aerth, the Jews were under the occupation of Rome and when Jesus claimed to be the Messiah, they had expected Him to overthrow the Romans in a miltary coup. When He entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, he rode on a donkey rather than on a military stallion! The Jews have never interpreted this passage as the suffering of their Messiah!
When I read this passage I tremble! Jesus was exalted through His suffering! This is a very hard conecpt for us to accept. Many were appalled to see Him duing his suffering before he was crucified. Pilate had hoped that scourging would appease the Jews in releasing Him. Instead we knew that he was scourged and mock, spit upon and wore a crown of thorns. His face was beaten to a pulp, he was bloodied, it was so horrific that we could not recognize Him!
He did this for you and for me. He suffered and died so that we could live. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5.21: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Let us meditate on Isaiah 52.13: See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. (NIV). Jesus was raised and lifted up literally on the cross but He is also raised, lifted up and exalted because of His obedience to the Father. Let us realise that everything in the Cjristian Life is base on TRUST and OBEDIENCE. Let us learn from the Perfect Servant how to live a life that is pleasing to God.
